Lives and Loves The Stories of Rowland Davis is a collection of twenty-five stories on human relationships grouped under the rubrics "Couples," "Dysfunctional," "Friends and Family," and "Parables." The first category explores the joys and sorrows of courtship, marriage, and widowhood for men and women who manage their lives and loves in some unusual ways. Loving relationships come into being accidentally or are created by shared sorrows that nonetheless cement ties and connections. The stories in "Dysfunctional" show couples whose lives have become unraveled through a variety of factors and circumstances, including both conventional and unconventional infidelity, tragedies, slipping sanity, and inexplicable events. "Friends and Family" tells of affectionate bonds between fathers and sons, care by step-parents, friendships between women, and haunting discoveries. The stories in the last category called "Parables" begin with a tale of a failed marriage but quickly become fantastic, leaving reality behind to explore larger philosophical issues.

The stories in Rowland Davis’s Lives and Loves are brief but complex and evocative tales. We have here stories of genuine love, if occasionally problematic love.In the first section, “Couples,” even when what is depicted is not a relationship that can be called a love affair as such a term is usually understood, there is no doubt that we are reading about love.
The second section bears the title “Dysfunctional,” but even there—even when the love is dysfunctional or delusional or futile—the story is always in some profound way a love story.
The fourth and last section is called “Parables,” but in fact many of the previous stories could be seen as striking and original parables as well. In the last two sections, especially, the tales are impressively effective in their brevity.
An innovative and moving collection.

Lives and Loves The Stories of Rowland Davis Rowland Davis 9781629070995 Books Reviews
The precision and restraint with which Davis writes allow the imaginative and emotional extremes that he unfolds to combine reality, intensity, and symbolism. So the realistic parts turn to parables and the parables are rooted in realism. The best of these stories, such as "Dew Drop" (a gem), "Still Life," and the amazing "Alone," achieve, like the paintings in "Still Life," an exactness that is incandescent.
Rowland Davis has written some very different and enjoyable short stories. Many with surprises at the end. He is a very clever author!
I love to read short stories, and I found this collection to be outstanding. The plots were intriguing, the characters believable and the stories' endings sometimes surprising but always satisfying. I especially liked "Dr. Marshall Is Dead" for its strong story line and "Reunion" for its excellent dialogue. Overall, "Lives and Loves" is a real treat. Bette Anderson
