SideStepping Landmines Five Principles for Pastor Search Teams Joel Rainey 9781478131496 Books Reviews
I've served in many churches through the years that have been torn to pieces trying to find the right person to serve as pastor. Joel Rainey's book, "Side-Stepping Landmines" would have helped tremendously. It's short and concise, easy to read, and provides straight-forward advise that will be an asset to any team. I especially like his emphasis of finding the "best" candidate rather than the most qualified.
As a Director of Missions, I'm amazed at how many times I have to teach the same things over and over again. Churches, like people, only pay attention when it applies to the current emergency. Joel Rainey lays out five common principles which pastor search teams desperately need to know. The genius of this little book is that it is a little book. It doesn't take long to read and won't run off the busy person or the lazy reader. I've purchased several to add to my must read list for the team leader or chairman.
I have served as a lay member of a search committee, have dealt with search committees as a pastor, and now help train search committees as an Associational Missionary. I enjoyed the principles laid out in "Side-Stepping Landmines" by Joel Rainey. As I was reading the book, the years seemed to come back. I saw mistakes that had been made that could have been avoided if the committees had been offered better training (or if they had listened better to the training that was offered). I also realized other landmines that also could have been include or that leaves ground for an additional follow-up book in the future. I recommend this little book as a must for Search Committees as they prepare themselves for the tremendous responsibility placed before them as they try to follow the Lord in searching for the "right" man to lead their church in the years ahead.
Joel Rainey and I are both Directors of Missions serving associations next to each other. He and I work with pastor search teams regularly. Sidestepping Land Mines is an excellent resource for training. Most pastor search books deal with the process and methods of finding and calling a pastor. Often the search team just implies that the pastor is a man of outstanding moral character and personal devotion to Christ and his calling. Joel does not talk down skills and process so much as during the search be in prayer to discover the underlying moral character of the person. If the pastor does not have high moral character and match the biblical qualifications of a pastor, it does not matter how charismatic his sugarstick sermon presentation. This book is a needed addition for any pastor search team.
Having been an association Director of Missions for 15 years in two Mega Cities, I have trained over 100 pastor search committees. I have used a variety of materials from a multitude of sources. Joel Rainey's little book is a good addition to the vast collection of books on the subject of pastor search committees. He takes a unique approach in that Rainey states "this booklet is not intended to be used as a comprehensive and exhaustive resource to find a pastor." The book deals more directly with what a pastor search committee shouldn't do than what it should do. I have experienced committees making every mistake that Rainey addresses. His book should help committees avoid the "landmines" that result in churches calling a pastor who does not fit their cultural expectations. The appendix alone, is worth the price of the book. The core behavioral questions for pastoral candidate are excellent. I recommend this book to pastor search committees as a supplement to some other literature that will be more organizational in the "How to" genera.
An excellent resource for church search committees. I highly recommend it to any church that is seeking the pastor
Very good resource. Short and easy to read with doctrinally sound advice.
